Map Cycle not big enough

Post by bsstv » Wed Mar 11, 2020 7:52 am

Hey, I really enjoy playing on this server, the only TDM server I like. Problem is, the Map Shuffle is too small to keep people playing sometimes. Its like a bad trip, the same thing over and over. Some people would like to binge. It would help to add 3-6 more maps. I have no problem with maps you already have, but the cycle just burns me out. I speak on behalf of quite a few others as well

Thanks

I see you speak TheTruth !

Thanks for the post.

Yes, maps are a big problem:
  • Most do not support bots which means they can't be in the standard rotation.
  • Others are too small (dressingroom) or too big (kingdom). They work fine if we have the appropriate number of players at the time and can adjust bot levels but requires admin intervention to make it work. Some servers have tried to enhance bot management but it has usually failed and resulted in loosing more players.
  • Some maps just encourage too much camping which makes for a piss boring game. Typically I will only have one or two maps like this in the rotation.
  • The final problem is that some people really hate specific maps. They will just leave if they don't like one, so introducing new maps to quickly has a negative effect on player numbers.
To help with this we have:
  • Grown the admin team so that we now have good 24hr coverage
  • Turned on map cycle voting: any player can open their game terminal and type: "/callvote cyclemap" to skip to the next map
  • Started to drip feed a few new maps into the cycle
  • Created a list of approved "out of cycle" maps. The admin can do a "!setnextmap <mapname>" for these maps without breaking the bot config
Current approved out of cycle maps:
  • dressingroom - very small open map, very intense, bots sometimes get stuck in the spawn areas
  • guerrilla_bots - small fun fairly open map
  • dust - medium size mostly open
  • turnpike - medium size mostly open
  • piketurn_rc1_bots same as turnpike with a few changes
  • sanctuary - medium size mostly open
  • subway - large mostly enclosed
  • chronic - large open map, telephone booths are teleporters
  • thingly - large open map, urban setting with streets, no rooftops
  • kingdom - very large, open but with plenty of buildings, passages and rooftops
  • terrorism6_bots - very large, open but with plenty of buildings, passages and rooftops
  • terrorism8_bots_lilymod1 - large (but smaller than terrorism6_bots) , open but with plenty of buildings, passages and rooftops
  • uptown_lilymod1 - Same as original but fixes bots getting stuck issue
  • offshore_lilymod1 - small very intense map lots of corners for sniping
A few things you can do to help:
  • Talk to other players and find out what they do or don't like and let us know
  • Ask any of the admins who are on to try an out of rotation map.
  • Let us know if you have any favorites we can try out
I will add a few extra maps this weekend and see what happens

Was Casa not in rotation at one point?

Hi Rorik,

Yes, Casa has been part of the rotation also Austria I think.

These are good candidates so I will put them back in

Lily had a lot of non-standard bot supported maps in the past... maybe we can get some of those in the cycle.

I love Kingdom, but it is very large so with only a few players can be quite boring. It is however on the admins approved out of cycle map list, so if there are any admins on, you can ask them to play it.

Uptown is a good CTF map, but in TDM tends to turn into a campfest. The default version, the bots get stuck in spawn but we do have a lily version where this has been fixed. The lily version is also on the admins map list, but if we get enough interest, I can promote it to the standard rotation.

Anyone else thoughts on Uptown ?

I like Kingdom and subway... chronic is okay but uptown, dressingroom is way too small

I like uptown. I think it's better without bots. And it's not really a campfest if you can move well enough to get out of spawn...
